                              3ds Max Art                          “In scientia veritas, in arte honestas.”The pursuit of science is the observation of beauty in our world. Autodesk 3ds Max (previously known as 3D Studio Max) is a powerful 3D computer graphics software that allows every interested individual — even without any training on painting — to generate 3-dimensional imagery with the tremendous power of computer. Being an amateur 3ds Max artist, I would always love to appreciate the beauty of science by the power of digital art, which in turn benefits from the advances of science and technology. From the past three years’ experience of using 3ds Max, I strongly feel the magic power of 3D rendering to better illustrate an abstract concept, a complicated model or design to viewers, which as a result would attract more interests from a broader audience and increase the impact of our work. Below is a selection of my 3Ds Max works made for myself and my colleagues, featuring the most cutting-edge breakthroughs in science. Some of them have been used in original research publications and news report articles to illustrate the structure of novel materials and setups in research.


    This drawing shows the damaged outer wall of a carbon nanotube with nanosized graphene pieces (white patches), which facilitate the formation of catalytic sites made of iron (yellow) and nitrogen (red) atoms. The catalyst reduces oxygen to water. (Nature Nanotechnology 2012, 7, 394-400)


    A tri-electrode battery to separate discharge and charge steps, featuring the use of layered double hydroxide nanocrystals (red flakes) on one electrode and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (green cylinders) on the other electrode. (Nature Communications 2013, 4, 1805)


    A simultaneous NIR-I and NIR-II in vivo imaging setup used in my recent Nature Medicine paper. (Nature Medicine 2012, 18, 1841-1846)


    A nanoscopic ruler sensitive to vertical distance has been used to track the endocytosis process of single carbon nanotube on plasmonic enhancing gold substrate. (Nature Communications 2012, 3, 700)


    The detection sensitivity of protein microarray assay can be dramatically improved by using plasmonic enhancing gold substrate, a novel technique developed by Prof. Hongjie Dai’s research team.


    A typical four-layer sensing system on a gold plasmonic substrate to achieve multiplexed cytokine detection with up to three orders of magnitude higher sensitivity than on conventional nitrocellulose and glass substrates. (Nano Research 2013, 6, 113-120)


    Strongly coupled inorganic/nanocarbon hybrid can be used as a novel catalyst system in oxygen depolarized cathode for oxygen reduction electrocatalysis. (Journal of the American Chemical Society 2012, 134, 15849–15857)


    Silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) coated with a biocompatible polymer can be used as a blood pool contrast agent with bright NIR-II fluorescence for angiography and cancer detection owing to their high tumor uptake. (Angewandte Chemie International Edition 2012, 51, 9818-9821)


    Molecular imaging of cancer cells can be greatly facilitated by using a fluorescence-enhancing substrate, called Au/Au film, to boost the intrinsic near-infrared II (NIR-II) fluorescence of single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) targeting probes. (Angewandte Chemie International Edition 2011, 50, 4644-4648)


    The intrinsic near-infrared fluorescence of carbon nanotubes can be enhanced by a thin film of gold (Au) with nano-island structures, which greatly facilitates the detection and spectroscopic measurement of single carbon nanotube molecules. (Journal of the American Chemical Society 2010, 132, 15920-15923)
